Insect Repellent Donated to the Fight against Zika in Brownsviille

Mike Hernandez III

With family roots in the Brownsville, Texas, community, Micheal Albert Hernandez III leads D & M Leasing in Dallas and focuses his efforts on philanthropic giving to Gulf Coast communities throughout Cameron and Starr Counties. In early 2016, Mike Hernandez III announced the launch of the PAC OP 10.33, which has an agenda of boosting the economic viability of Brownsville, singled out as one of the poorest regions in the United States.

One effort, undertaken in August 2016, involved the donation of insect repellent for use in the fight against the Zika virus. As reported on CBS 4 News, the donation came after an El Paso, Texas, resident contracted the virus while in Florida, and on the heels of ramped-up efforts to stave off a potential epidemic in Cameron County.

Through OP10.33, Mike Hernandez III spearheaded the distribution of informational pamphlets on the virus, along with spray cans of insect repellent. This was seen as particularly important for the city’s most vulnerable residents, who are unable to purchase repellent using food stamps. A major distribution point was the Good Neighbor Settlement House, which stands as one of the county’s most active shelters.
